I built Ojas because every brightening serum I’d tried told the same story: one hero ingredient, one promise, one mechanism. But pigmentation is shaped by multiple biological pathways. My skin is Indian — pigment-prone, reactive, and unforgiving of single-active formulas. The question I kept asking the lab was simple: what would it look like to formulate around all four of those pathways at once — tyrosinase, melanosome transfer, oxidative load, and dermal collagen biology? Ojas is the answer.

Hyperpigmentation is shaped by multiple, well-studied biological pathways — tyrosinase activity, melanosome transfer between cells, oxidative load, and dermal extracellular matrix biology. Ojas is formulated around actives that have each been individually researched in connection with these areas, housed within a stabilized antioxidant matrix and engineered to support the appearance of even, luminous-looking skin.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) — the molecular precursor to NAD⁺. Niacinamide is the substrate from which cells produce NAD⁺ and NADP⁺ via the salvage pathway — coenzymes that play a central role in cellular energy metabolism, redox biology, and gene expression. Research has documented a measurable decline in NAD⁺/NADP⁺ redox ratios in aged skin (Matts et al., IFSCC Magazine, 2002) — a finding that has positioned NAD⁺ biology at the center of contemporary cosmetic science. Niacinamide has been extensively studied in connection with ceramide biology (Tanno et al., Br J Dermatol, 2000) and with melanosome transfer between melanocytes and keratinocytes (Hakozaki et al., Br J Dermatol, 2002) — a research area distinct from tyrosinase chemistry.

10% Azelaic Acid — a well-researched dicarboxylic acid. A naturally-occurring nine-carbon dicarboxylic acid studied in the dermatology literature for its associations with skin tone and the appearance of clarity (Sieber & Hegel, J Dtsch Dermatol Ges, 2014). Research has also explored its role in connection with the appearance of calmer-looking skin — a combination uncommon among tone-supporting ingredients. In Ojas it is used in micronized form as a suspension, which is why the serum may appear faintly opalescent rather than water-clear.

Ascorbyl Glucoside — a stabilized form of Vitamin C. A precursor form of L-ascorbic acid, studied for its conversion to active Vitamin C within the skin via α-glucosidase, an enzyme naturally present in skin cells. Vitamin C’s role as a cofactor in collagen biology has been the subject of decades of research (Pullar et al., Nutrients, 2017). The glucoside derivative is stable at near-neutral pH, addressing one of the formulation challenges of unmodified L-ascorbic acid — and remaining compatible with azelaic acid at the serum’s target pH.

1% Kojic Acid — a fermentation-derived compound. A small molecule produced naturally during fermentation, and one of the most-researched ingredients in the dermatology literature on tyrosinase biology.

1% Alpha Lipoic Acid — an amphipathic antioxidant. A naturally-occurring compound, soluble in both water and lipid environments. Research has documented its role within the cellular antioxidant network, including studies of its interaction with vitamins C and E, glutathione, and CoQ10 (Packer et al., Free Radic Biol Med, 1995).

Sodium Hyaluronate — a low-molecular-weight humectant. The sodium salt of hyaluronic acid, used here at low molecular weight for a lighter feel and smoother finish beneath the active complex.

Tocopherol and Disodium EDTA — the stability architecture. A multi-active formula containing alpha lipoic acid and a vitamin C derivative is only as good as its protection against oxidation. Tocopherol’s redox cycling with ascorbate is a foundational topic in antioxidant biochemistry; disodium EDTA chelates the trace metals that catalyze oxidative degradation. Neither is a marketing ingredient — both are load-bearing.

Each of these actives has been studied independently across dermatology and cosmetic science research. Niacinamide and Ascorbyl Glucoside are intracellular by chemistry. Azelaic acid and kojic acid are studied in relation to tyrosinase biology. Alpha lipoic acid has been studied across the cellular antioxidant network. Ojas combines them in a single matrix.

Apply a small amount to clean, dry skin as directed by a skincare professional. Introduce gradually when using active regimens. Use daily sunscreen.
