Sanika is a buildable color tint designed for lips, cheeks, and soft-focus face color, formulated with a lipid-soluble form of Vitamin C. Plum seed oil, shea butter, the Vitamin C ester, and food-grade mineral pigments create a conditioning veil of color that melts into skin and lips for a radiant, natural-looking finish.

All Sanika Color Tints are made by hand in limited batches by our founder at our lab — so once a color is gone, there’s no knowing when it’ll return.

Sanika is the product I almost didn’t make. Color seemed beneath the rest of the line — until I read the Berkeley study on heavy metals in mainstream lipsticks. The researchers measured quantifiable lead and chromium ingestion from everyday lipstick use. That’s not a marketing problem; it’s a science problem. Color cosmetics are the most worn skincare in a routine. They should also be the safest. Sanika is color formulated with food-grade pigments — because statistically, you’ll ingest some of it.

Color cosmetics are the most worn skincare in any routine — applied multiple times daily to lips and cheeks, surfaces where the stratum corneum is thinner and absorption higher than the rest of the face. They are also routinely ingested. A 2013 University of California, Berkeley study published in Environmental Health Perspectives tested 32 mainstream lipsticks and lip glosses, detecting lead in 75% of samples alongside cadmium, chromium, aluminum, and five additional metals (Liu, Hammond & Rojas-Cheatham, Environ Health Perspect, 2013). The researchers noted that high-use consumers — defined at 87 mg daily — could exceed safe daily intake thresholds for chromium and manganese. Sanika was engineered against that reality.

Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (THD Ascorbate) — a lipid-soluble form of Vitamin C. L-ascorbic acid is unstable in the presence of light, oxygen, and water; most Vitamin C products show measurable oxidation within hours of opening. THD Ascorbate is a lipid-soluble ester of ascorbic acid, stable at skin-neutral pH and researched in connection with its conversion to active Vitamin C by esterase enzymes naturally present in skin (Maloney et al., J Cosmet Dermatol, 2026). Vitamin C’s role within collagen biology is one of the most-studied topics in dermatology research (Pullar et al., Nutrients, 2017). Sanika’s base is entirely anhydrous — there is no water in the formula for the ester to degrade in.

Food-grade mineral pigments (Iron Oxides; Titanium Dioxide). Every colorant in Sanika is an FDA-approved color additive for lip and cheek use under 21 CFR 73 and 74 — and both iron oxides (21 CFR 73.200) and titanium dioxide (21 CFR 73.575) additionally hold food-additive designations. No synthetic FD&C lakes. Titanium dioxide is specified non-nano.

Plum Seed Oil — the base. Prunus domestica seed oil makes up nearly half the formula, selected for a light, non-comedogenic feel. It is also oxidation-prone, which is why tocopherol is present at the top of its useful range.

The lipid base houses the Vitamin C ester. The pigments meet food-grade regulatory designations. Most lip tints are color first, skincare second, regulatory afterthought. Sanika inverts the sequence — the color and the skincare are the same substance.
